Chapter Twenty-Three

Evelyn

The mob of shouting reporters left after I gave one short statement:

“I am in love with Lily Hart. She has a jaded past, but has turned a new leaf in life. She regrets the horrible things she’s said about the fanged community. She, like so many others, lived veiled in a world of ignorance. Together, we hope to educate not only our city, but our country, and even those living abroad, on the truth.

This is a huge moment in our lives and we ask all of you to respect our privacy. I understand, we understand, this is also a huge moment for our community. We know our love represents hope and change to many, but we ask you all to only admire our love from afar.”

They left, because I still had a little magic in me from my days in the coven. Most of it was bound when I was banished, but you can’t take every last drop of magic out of a witch, no matter how hard you try. Usually, I just used it to keep my house spotless, but sometimes it came in handy for other things. Like chasing off nosy reporters. They’ll be back, though. They always are.

I knew Lily wouldn’t like me speaking for her, but now wasn’t the time to consider her feelings. When I saved her and lied for her, I considered her. Now was the time to consider the fate of my restaurant and my life after Lily left.

“What colors would you like for the wedding, dear?” I asked Lily an hour after everything settled down. The kitchen had been quiet and Kelly concentrated on her job instead of silently giving my fake fiancé the stink eye.

Lily startled and looked up from the bridal magazine. Her thumb still marked the page with a beautiful silver line white gown. The train was longer than her body.

Very um…. Traditional. Not what I had in mind for a fanged wedding, but it’s not real after all. It’s all for show. Shirley’s going to love this. First, she has to deal with me turning Lily without the paperwork, now it’s a pre-nuptial agreement and adoption papers for Opal, and then finally it’ll be my divorce. Shit, she wasn’t allowed to be mad. My foolishness was buying her Birkin Bag collection.

“Dear?” Lily arched a brow and barely hid the laughter threatening to bubble over her bowtie lips.

“Yes, dear in public,” I laughed. “I’ll save the dirty talk for the bedroom.”

I moved closer to her, so Kelly and the others couldn’t hear what I said next.

“Play along, please? Some of these people don’t know our secret and I’d like to keep it that way. The more people who know, the more chance of us both getting arrested.”

“What about white and silver or is that too overdone?” Lily asked without missing a beat.

“It is to be a winter wedding,” I nodded. “Not that either of us could wear white with honesty.”

Lily blushed and it was hard not to think about last night.
